If primates are more your cup of tea, then you are in the right place. Aside from the legendary mountain gorillas found in the southwest of the country, Uganda boasts 19 other species of primates including approximately 5,000 chimpanzees.
Kaniyo Pabidi Forest is 268 square km and the second largest of the four forest blocks within the Budongo Forest Reserve and home to more than 600 chimpanzees. It's also one of the best places to see them. Located close to the Kichumbanyobo gate to Murchison Falls National Park, this magnificent virgin forest contains impressive towering mahogany trees and ironwood trees and is a complete haven of biodiversity. Taking 2-4 hours a guided walk through this lush forest will not only allow you to see one of the habituated chimpanzee families (once found you will spend 1hr with them) but also an opportunity to see black-and-white colobus monkeys and red-tailed monkeys.
Chimp trekking is one of several activities available at Budongo Forest. All the activities are organised by Great Lakes Safaris and as per their website, children below the age of 15 are allowed to participate in chimp trekking if their parents agree to sign a consent form allowing them to participate in the activity.
