In Uganda, White Rhinos can only be found at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, after extreme poaching killed the last wild rhino in 1982.
Established in 2005, with just 6 Southern White Rhinos, Ziwa’s goal was originally to reintroduce rhinos back to their natural habitat in Murchison Falls National Park and other national parks. Astonishingly, in less than 20 years, Ziwa has successfully increased their population of rhinos to 50 and you can now experience the thrill of walking within just a few metres of them. We highly recommend supporting this incredible work and experiencing getting “up close and personal” with such an iconic animal.
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is located in Nakasongola district, on the Kampala/Gulu road which is an easy stop off whether on your way, or on your return from Murchison Falls National Park. Unless staying at Ziwa overnight, their opening hours are between 7am - 6pm.
